Editor review

Rallycross X is rallycross. Sprint races on circuits that alternate tarmac and dirt sections. The skill is transitioning between surfaces, because the handling characteristics are different enough that switching corner techniques mid-lap is a real part of the challenge.

Right, this is a genre I'm partial to because the surface-transition mechanic is one of the more underused things in racing games. Most racers pick a surface and live there. Rallycross actually uses the mixed surfaces as the central mechanic. Dirt corners need wider lines and earlier throttle. Tarmac corners need later braking and tighter apex commitment. Rallycross X gets both right and forces you to switch.

The eight circuits are well-designed. Each has a different tarmac-to-dirt ratio (the muddy track 6 is roughly 70 percent dirt and the airport track 4 is roughly 80 percent tarmac), which changes the strategic approach. You can't run the same setup across all eight tracks.

Multiplayer is functional. Eight-player lobbies fill reasonably quickly during peak hours. I had a competitive four-player race on track 5 (about 50/50 split) that came down to half a second on the final lap. That's the kind of moment that makes racing-game multiplayer worth showing up for.

Four stars. Strong execution of an underused racing format. Half-star reservation is the AI single-player content thinning out after the eight-track campaign, but multiplayer mostly carries the longevity.
