Editor review
Karting Junior is family-friendly kart racing. No power-ups. No aggression. No combat. Just clean-line kart driving across twelve tracks with appropriately scaled karts and AI opponents that play at an accessible difficulty level.
Right, this is a category that doesn't get respect from racing-game discourse but absolutely should. There's a real audience for kart racing without the Mario-Kart-style item warfare, and Karting Junior serves that audience without condescending to it. The driving model is real: brake into corners, hold a line through apex, accelerate out. Just at slower speeds and without items.
I played this with my eight-year-old niece over a weekend visit. She picked it up in about ten minutes and was running competitive lap times within an hour. Two-player split-screen on the same keyboard worked, which is the killer feature for this category. Most parents who'd otherwise pass on kart racing because of the chaos factor would find this actually usable.
The twelve tracks are well-distinguished. Some are simple loops, some have elevation changes, some have weather. The progression introduces complexity gradually. Standard family-game pacing.
Three-and-a-half stars. Excellent at what it sets out to be. Half-star reservation is that for older or more competitive players the difficulty caps out before getting interesting. Recommended specifically for the kid-friendly use case, less so as a general kart-racer pick.
Did six years in QA at a mobile game publisher before the 2024 layoffs took the team. Now contracts QA and reviews games here on the side. Plays on a refusing-to-upgrade Android phone.
