How to play

Standard driving controls (WASD or arrow keys). Ram other vehicles in their weak spots: front-grille hits damage the engine quickly; rear hits damage the drivetrain; side hits damage steering. Avoid being rammed in your own weak spots. The arena floor is featureless; positioning relative to walls and other cars is everything.

Game features

  • Eight-car free-for-all arenas with varied wall layouts
  • Per-panel damage modelling affects specific performance subsystems
  • Six unlockable cars with distinct mass and armour profiles
  • Three arenas: open circle, walled rectangle, pillared field
  • Quick-match mode and tournament bracket mode
  • Local statistics tracking: wins, kills, average survival time

Editor review

Demolition Derby is arena combat with cars. Last car running wins. Ram opponents into walls and each other while your own bodywork progressively fails. The genre is at least four decades old and has the formula it's going to have.

Right, Demolition Derby gets the basics right. Damage model is satisfying: cars deform visibly, components fail when damaged enough, you can see which corners of your own car are still functional. AI opponents play aggressively without being suicidal, which is the right tuning for the genre.

Where it loses ground is the variety. Three arenas. Three vehicle classes. Maybe twenty hours of variety total before you've seen every combination and tactic. The basic arena loop wears thin faster than a game like this needs to.

Multiplayer would solve this and the multiplayer mode is functional but the lobbies are usually dead. I waited eight minutes for a four-player lobby to fill once and gave up. Single-player against AI is fine but doesn't have the spite-driven joy that the genre's best moments come from.

Three-and-a-half stars. Solid implementation of the basic loop. Needs more content or a living multiplayer to be a real recommendation. Worth a couple of hours, not a habit.
