How to play

Standard driving controls. Boats accelerate and decelerate slowly compared to cars; turns require leaning in rather than tight steering. Beware of buoy markers and shoreline; rough water from other boats wakes affects handling.

Game features

  • Eight aquatic circuits with distinct water characters
  • Water physics with realistic inertia and lean-based turning
  • Six boat variants from runabout to hydrofoil
  • Wake mechanics affect trailing boats
  • Career mode plus single-race time-trial
  • Mobile-friendly touch steering

Editor review

Boat Race is speedboat racing across lakes, rivers, and coastal circuits. Water physics is the central thing, and the developer here gets it mostly right. The boat slides and pitches based on speed and wave state. Hard turns produce real lateral skid. Hitting wake at speed lifts the bow. The water has weight that the boat is fighting through.

Right, this is the thing that distinguishes good water racing from bad. Bad water racing treats the boat like a slightly slidier car. Good water racing treats water like the medium it actually is, with currents and wakes and viscosity-feeling drag. Boat Race is closer to the second than the first.

Where it loses some ground is the track variety. The eight courses are visually distinct but mechanically similar. Open-water courses don't really vary the strategy from river-narrow ones. The coastal-wave courses are the most interesting because the wave physics actively pushes you around, but there are only two of those.

AI opponents are decent. They make racing decisions that are humanly readable, which is what you want from arcade racing AI. Multiplayer exists but the lobbies are mostly empty.

Three-and-a-half stars. Strong physics model, light on content variety, recommended if you specifically want water racing and aren't going to play the dozens of car racers in the catalogue instead. Niche-genre niche.
