Editor review

Wing IO is top-down multiplayer aircraft dogfights. Bank into turns. Manage altitude. Eliminate rival planes for kill score. Different from the single-player Air Combat Pro (also on this site) in that this is real-time multiplayer with up to 30 players.

Honestly, multiplayer dogfighting is harder than it sounds to design well. Real-time aircraft positioning at the speed dogfights happen at requires very low input latency. Wing IO has acceptable but not exceptional latency on the servers I tested. Most engagements felt fair. A few had visible lag that resulted in unfair kills (or, more often for me, unfair deaths).

The plane variety is decent. Five plane classes: fighter (balanced), interceptor (fast, fragile), heavy (slow, durable), stealth (low visibility on the radar), and bomber (anti-ground). Each has trade-offs that matter in different match phases. Interceptors clean up at the start when everyone is fighting in the open. Stealth becomes valuable mid-game when survivors are hunting each other. Heavies dominate the late-game when you can absorb hits.

The match structure is the part I'm mid on. Free-for-all only, 15-minute match length, top-five score-leaderboard at match end. There's no team mode, no objective mode, no campaign. The matches feel similar across hours of play.

Three-and-a-half stars. Solid dogfight format with decent plane variety. Half-star reservation is the lack of mode variety, which limits the format's long-term appeal.
