Editor review

Star Fighter is pseudo-3D space-fighter combat. Rear-view chase camera with depth-sense targeting. The Star Fox tradition (1993, Nintendo) is the reference and Star Fighter is honest about that reference.

Right, the honesty doesn't save it. Star Fox worked in 1993 because the pseudo-3D was technically impressive at the time and the on-rails design hid the limitations of the camera. Star Fighter in 2026 has to compete with fully-3D space sims and the pseudo-3D camera just looks dated. Not nostalgic-dated. Just bad-dated.

The combat is fine. You aim with a reticle, shoot at incoming enemies, dodge incoming fire. Targets approach from depth-distance and your aim has to account for their movement. That's the genre's central mechanic and Star Fighter implements it correctly.

But the camera does the design a real disservice. The rear-view chase camera means you can't see what's behind or beside you. Threats from those angles arrive as surprise damage. There's no skill counter to this because you literally cannot see the threats. It's a design flaw of the genre and Star Fighter doesn't innovate past it.

Two-and-a-half stars. Faithful Star Fox tribute that doesn't account for how the genre has moved on. Worth a quick play if you have specific affection for the 1993 original. Otherwise skip.
