Tank Wars

Move with arrow keys or WASD; fire with space. Defend your base (the marked building) from enemy tank attacks. Destroy all enemy tanks in a level to advance. Power-ups grant temporary upgrades: faster shooting, armoured tank, instant base repair, or rare wall-pierce shells.

Tank Wars is Battle City. The 1985 Namco arcade game made famous by the Famicom port, recreated faithfully here with 40 levels and modern conveniences. Top-down tank shooter. Defend your base. Walls degrade as bullets hit them. Some walls are concrete and indestructible. Some walls are water that bullets pass over. Some walls are forests that hide tanks. And some walls are breakable bricks that take three hits each.

Right, the central decision in this genre is whether to break walls toward an enemy or leave them as cover for yourself. Tank Wars makes this real. Breaking your forward wall opens your line of fire but exposes your base. Hugging concrete makes you safer but slower. There's no dominant strategy, which is the right shape for the genre.

The 40 levels build difficulty through layout and enemy variety. Early levels have basic enemy tanks that drive in straight lines. Mid-campaign introduces faster tanks, armoured tanks that need multiple hits, fast-and-armoured combos, and the dreaded supply tank that drops power-ups for the enemy. Late levels combine all of these with maze-like terrain that punishes positioning mistakes.

Two-player co-op on the same keyboard is the killer feature. You and a friend each control one tank. You can shoot each other but that's friendly fire. Some levels are designed for two players and feel cramped solo.

Four stars. Faithful tribute that doesn't overreach. Half-star reservation is that the AI is predictable enough that the late-game stops surprising you.
