Editor review
Zombie Defense is wave-based top-down zombie shooter. Weapon upgrades. Barricade-building. Escalating horde sizes. The expected loop. The genre is well-trodden and Zombie Defense doesn't reinvent it.
Right, what works is the barricade-building system. Between waves you can spend earned money on barriers, repairs, and weapon upgrades. The barricade placement creates real spatial puzzle: where do you funnel zombies? Where do you leave gaps to channel them? The first eight waves have me actually planning placement rather than spam-buying.
What stops working is the late-game scaling. By wave 15 the zombie count is so high that strategic placement stops mattering. The horde just overwhelms whatever you build. There's no real way to optimise past a certain point because the spawn rate exceeds your kill rate regardless of skill.
Weapon variety is okay. Pistols, rifles, shotguns, grenades, the standard pack. Each has cost-effectiveness trade-offs that matter for the first few waves. Past that the optimal loadout is just whichever weapon does the most DPS, because subtle trade-offs no longer matter.
Three stars. Functional zombie defender. Strong for the first hour, falls apart in the second. Worth a couple of sessions.
Did six years in QA at a mobile game publisher before the 2024 layoffs took the team. Now contracts QA and reviews games here on the side. Plays on a refusing-to-upgrade Android phone.
