Splix Battle is the grid-based territory game with team modes. Expand your colour. Attack opponents who enter your territory. Claim the map. Splix.io (2017) defined this format on the square-grid and Splix Battle is a competent extension of that template with team-mode additions.
The team-mode is the design's interesting layer. Two-team matches assign you and three other players to one colour. You coordinate territorial expansion against an opposing team of four. The strategic puzzle becomes coordinating with teammates: who expands in which direction, who defends specific borders, who sacrifices personal territory for team strategic position.
Honestly, team play in casual .io games rarely works well because the player base doesn't coordinate. Splix Battle handles this better than most because the team-mode includes minimal ping-and-callout tools that let you communicate basic intent without typing. You can ping "expand here" or "defend this" with a click. The communication is shallow but enough to enable basic coordination.
The single-player free-for-all mode is also available and works the way you'd expect a Splix.io variant to work. 30 players, 20 minute matches, last colour holding most territory wins.
Four stars. Strong Splix.io variant with workable team mode. Half-star reservation is the matchmaking, which sometimes pairs you with very new players who don't coordinate. The team mode at higher skill tiers is where the format really shines.
