Snake Royale

Mouse-steer the snake. Eat food to grow. Boost key for speed bursts (consumes length). Stay inside the shrinking safe zone. Force opponents into your body for elimination. Last snake standing wins.

Snake Royale is snake-arena with battle-royale shrinking zone. Outlast 50 players. Grow large. Survive the closing safe area. The battle-royale layer on top of the snake-arena format is the design's clever twist and it works well.

Look, the shrinking-zone mechanic is a battle-royale staple (PUBG codified it in 2017) and adding it to snake-arena creates a strategic dimension the basic snake-arena format lacks. In Slither Battle (also on this site, 5 stars) the strategic decision is mostly about how to outmanoeuvre other worms. In Snake Royale you also have to outmanoeuvre the zone, which closes in stages over the match. The two pressures combine into a richer strategic puzzle.

The 50-player lobbies are right-sized for the format. Match length is variable (typically 10 to 18 minutes) depending on player skill and aggression. I have won maybe three matches out of forty attempts, which is the right win-rate for a competitive game at my level. Top-five finishes are more common (maybe 25 percent) and feel earned.

Where I appreciate the design is how the zone-pressure creates emergent late-game scenarios. In the final five players, the shrinking zone forces conflict that worm-strategy alone couldn't engineer. You can't just defend a corner. You have to engage. The endgame is actually tense in ways that pure Slither.io endgames aren't.

Four-and-a-half stars. Strong battle-royale-meets-snake-arena hybrid. Half-star reservation is just that I prefer the pure Slither Battle for sustained play. Snake Royale is the more exciting individual match but Slither Battle is the better long-term game.
