Editor review

Race IO is top-down multiplayer racing. 20 players, four-lap races on procedural tracks with power-up pickups. The format is essentially Mario Kart in a browser tab. Different from Kart Battle on this site because Race IO is multiplayer-first rather than single-player-AI-with-multiplayer-option.

Honestly, the racing physics is decent without being remarkable. Vehicles handle responsively. Power-ups affect race position meaningfully (the standard set: speed boost, defensive shield, offensive projectile, AOE slow-down). Procedural tracks vary enough to keep matches feeling different.

What's mid is the power-up balance. The offensive projectile (the equivalent of Mario Kart's red shell) targets the player ahead of the user, which means it disproportionately punishes leading players. Combined with the rubber-band catch-up assists that procedural tracks include, the result is that being in first place is more punishing than being in second or third. That's the wrong incentive for a competitive racing game.

The 20-player lobby is the right size. Match length is appropriate at four laps (about 8 to 12 minutes). Matchmaking fills reasonably quickly during peak hours.

Three stars. Functional multiplayer kart racer with one significant balance issue. Worth a few sessions for the format. The power-up balance keeps it from being a long-term play.
