Paper Territory IO is the trail-trace territory game. Draw lines out from your safe zone. Return to your zone to claim the enclosed area. Get cut off by an opponent and you die. Stay inside your territory to be safe but accomplish nothing. The Paper.io original (2017) defined this format and Paper Territory IO is a respectable browser version.
Look, the trail-trace mechanic is the format's central pleasure. Your line drawn outside your territory is exposed. Opponents who cross your line at any point eliminate you instantly. So there's constant risk-reward: extend further for bigger territorial gains, or retreat early to bank the smaller gain safely. This is the design's whole loop and it's compelling for the same reason Snake compels: simple rules, immediate stakes, a real spatial puzzle, and the constant pressure of opponents converging on your line.
I want to point out the strategic depth that's easy to miss. Skilled players don't just trace shapes; they trace shapes that force opponents into bad positions. A long thin trace pointed at an opponent's territory cuts off their escape routes. A loop that wraps around an opponent's safe zone can lock them into a corner. The genre's higher levels of play are about reading opponent paths and pressuring them strategically, not just maximising your own area.
The 50-player lobbies fill quickly. Match length is variable (typically 10 to 25 minutes) depending on how long it takes for the player pool to collapse to a single winner. I have won maybe four matches across about thirty attempts, which is the right kind of win rate for a competitive game.
Four-and-a-half stars. Excellent trail-trace territory game with real strategic depth. Half-star reservation is just that 50-player lobbies sometimes feel chaotic in the early minutes before player counts drop.
