Editor review
Mushroom Knight is a small knight in mushroom armour. Pixel-art platformer with sword combat and three world biomes. The visual hook is charming. The platforming is competent. The combat is the part to evaluate.
I'll be honest: the sword combat is where Mushroom Knight is going for more depth than the rest of the game supports. You have light attack, heavy attack, parry, and dash. The parry is actually useful (deflect projectiles, stagger enemies on melee blocks) and the dash has invincibility frames. But the enemy designs are mostly straightforward (charge at you, swing, repeat), so the combat depth never has anything interesting to apply to.
What's good is the level structure. Each of the three biomes (forest, swamp, mountain) has six interconnected levels with hidden paths and collectibles. Not quite Metroidvania but more interconnected than a typical level-by-level platformer. Returning to earlier areas with new abilities (the dash is unlocked in biome 2) shows you what you missed.
The pixel art is excellent. Backgrounds are layered with depth. Character animations are smooth. The mushroom-armor visual is consistent across upgrades.
Three-and-a-half stars. Charming visuals and solid platforming carry the experience past combat that doesn't quite earn its complexity. Worth a play if pixel-art platformers appeal to you. The whole game is about four hours.
