Editor review
Crystal Caves is a Metroidvania. It is the small compact Metroidvania I keep recommending and now I get to write the review explaining why. The format is well-understood: interconnected map, ability gates that unlock new traversal options, you return to previously unreachable areas as you gain abilities. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night codified it in 1997 and Hollow Knight perfected it in 2017, and Crystal Caves is doing a small browser-scale version of the same form.
What makes Crystal Caves work is the density of the map. The whole game is maybe four hours, but those four hours pack more interconnection than some 30-hour open-world games manage. Every screen has an exit you can't access yet. Every ability you pick up unlocks three or four previous screens. The dopamine of seeing a shortcut click into place is constant and well-earned.
The five movement abilities (double-jump, dash, wall-cling, water-breath, and the late-game hover) are well-distinguished and each actually changes how you approach the map. The boss fights, all four of them, are pattern-readable but require real execution. I died maybe 25 times on the final boss before learning his attack tells.
Pixel art is hand-crafted. Soundtrack is a generative ambient piece that shifts with location. There are no popups. No ads inside the game. No saves required, the game just remembers where you were and lets you pick up where you left off.
Five stars. Best platformer on this site and one of the best browser games I've reviewed period. If you have any affection for the Metroidvania format, play this. Four hours, no regrets.
