Editor review

Mechanic Bot is a platformer with parts you can swap between levels. Legs for jumping. Treads for ramming. Jets for hovering. Wheels for fast horizontal movement. Each level has hidden parts to discover and you start each new level by choosing which configuration to use, knowing you can only equip three parts at a time.

Look, I love this design. The parts-as-decisions mechanic is what platformer character-upgrade systems should aspire to. It's not stat-scaling. It's actual gameplay variation. Bringing the jet-pack into level 8 means trading off the rapid-fire weapon for traversal. Bringing the heavy treads into level 12 means trading off jump height for the ability to break certain walls. Every level has multiple valid loadouts and every loadout produces a different way to play.

The 40 levels are designed with this variety in mind. Most levels have at least three viable approaches. The level-design team did the hard work of ensuring no single loadout is dominant. I cleared the game once with my preferred jets-and-rapid-fire build and replayed half of it with a heavy-treads-and-grapple build. actually different experience second time through.

What's good elsewhere: pixel art is hand-crafted. Music is upbeat without being annoying. The boss fights (one per world, three worlds total) each have multiple solutions depending on loadout.

Four-and-a-half stars. Strong platformer with the best parts-system implementation I've seen in browser. Half-star reservation is the late-game grind for the optional cosmetic parts, which adds tedium that the core game doesn't need. Skip the cosmetic hunting and the main campaign is excellent.
