How to play

Move with the mouse or WASD; your hole follows. Consume objects by passing your hole over them — smaller objects are absorbed instantly, larger objects only when your hole has grown enough. Other players are also holes; the bigger hole consumes the smaller on contact. Match ends after two minutes with the largest hole winning.

  • Real-time multiplayer arena with 16 players per match
  • Two-minute match duration suited to quick browser sessions
  • Object-size progression: cars to trees to buildings to landmarks
  • Customisable hole patterns and colours
  • End-of-match leaderboard with size rankings
  • Multiple urban environment maps for variety

Editor review

Hole Hunter IO is the multiplayer hole-growth arena. You play a hole in the ground. Objects fall in. Each object increases your hole's diameter. Bigger objects are worth more growth but require a bigger hole to fit. Eventually your hole is big enough to swallow other players' holes whole.

Honestly, Hole.io (2018) was the original and this is a close clone of it. What Hole Hunter IO does competently is the size-versus-mobility trade-off. Small holes are fast but can only eat small objects. Big holes are slow but eat everything. The mid-game strategic decision is whether to keep gobbling small things quickly (which works in dense object zones) or pivot to hunting other players (which requires positioning and pursuit).

The arena design is the design's secondary strength. Each map has different object density patterns: dense urban zones with cars and people, sparse rural zones with trees and small buildings, mixed zones with both, and the rare special zone that's all moving objects. Knowing which zone to position in based on your current size is a real strategic decision. Small holes thrive in dense zones. Large holes hunt in sparse zones where players are forced to move through clear lines of sight.

What's mid is the match length. Four-minute matches feel rushed for the strategic complexity on offer. Twice as long would let the late-game pursuit phase develop more interestingly. As it stands, matches end before the most interesting strategic situations fully resolve.

Four stars. Strong hole-growth clone with thoughtful map design. Half-star reservation is the match length, which I think is the wrong trade-off for the depth this format can deliver.
