Editor review
Galaxy Strike is horizontal-scrolling space shooter with shield-orb mechanics. The R-Type tradition. Six stages with boss encounters at the end of each. R-Type (1987, Irem) is the canonical entry in horizontal-scrolling space shooters and Galaxy Strike clearly references it visually and mechanically.
Right, the shield-orb mechanic is the design's headline feature. Your ship has a detachable shield-orb that floats nearby. Position it forward to block enemy fire from ahead. Position it behind to block ambushes from the rear. Position it absorbing enemy projectiles to power up its own attack. The orb-positioning meta is the strategic layer the genre is best known for and Galaxy Strike implements it correctly.
The six stages are individually well-designed. Each has a thematic visual identity and introduces one new threat pattern. Stage 3 (the asteroid field with embedded turrets) is my favourite for how it forces you to use the orb as both forward shield and threat-clear. Stage 5 is the boss-rush stage where you fight five mini-bosses back to back.
The boss fights are pattern-readable but demand execution. Each has three to four phases. Pattern recognition takes a few attempts. After that the fight becomes about clean play.
Four-and-a-half stars. Strong R-Type tribute with the genre's central mechanic well-implemented. Half-star reservation is that the final boss has a phase that requires precise orb-positioning that isn't taught well by earlier stages. Plan for several attempts on that fight.
Did six years in QA at a mobile game publisher before the 2024 layoffs took the team. Now contracts QA and reviews games here on the side. Plays on a refusing-to-upgrade Android phone.
