Editor review

Forest Spirit is a gentle no-combat platformer through enchanted forest scenes. Collect light orbs. Awaken sleeping creatures. Peaceful pace. The whole genre is sometimes called "cozy" in marketing speak, and Forest Spirit is squarely in that category without apologising for it.

Look, I'm aware that "cozy game" is a contested label. Some people roll their eyes at it. I will defend Forest Spirit on its merits without leaning on the cozy framing. The platforming is competent. Jump arcs are deterministic. Edge-grab is generous in the player's favour. The level design rewards exploration with hidden creatures to awaken and shortcut paths that the main critical path doesn't require.

What makes Forest Spirit work is that the lack of combat is a deliberate design constraint that the rest of the game responds to. Without enemies to fight, the platforming has to carry interest on its own. The designer responded by making the levels richer in exploration content. There are more secret paths per minute of play than in most combat-heavy platformers, because exploration is the point rather than a sidequest.

The visual presentation is delicate watercolour pixel-art. Sound design is a generative ambient piece with creature-awakening tones layered on top. The whole thing has a specific aesthetic and commits to it.

Four stars. Solid no-combat platformer with thoughtful level design. Worth the three-to-four-hour campaign if you specifically want a peaceful platformer between intense games.
