Editor review

Defender X is a tribute to the 1981 Williams Defender. Side-scrolling space defender. Protect ground humans from abducting aliens. The original is one of the harder arcade games ever made and Defender X respects that legacy by being appropriately demanding.

Right, the original Defender was a difficulty masterpiece. Multiple threats from multiple directions. A radar showing off-screen action. Humans you had to protect by intercepting aliens carrying them upward. Defender X reproduces all of this without softening any of it.

The radar is the design's central feature and it's drawn correctly. You see the whole battlefield in a top-strip mini-map. Off-screen threats are visible there. Decision-making is about prioritising which threats to intercept first based on what the radar shows. This is hard. It's supposed to be hard. Defender X doesn't help you, which is the right call.

The human-rescue mechanic is the other essential part. Aliens grab humans from the ground and try to fly them off the top of the screen. Shoot the alien mid-abduction and the human falls. Catch the human mid-fall and return them to the ground for a points bonus. Miss the catch and the human dies. Lose all your humans and the level becomes a hellscape.

Four-and-a-half stars. Strong Defender tribute that doesn't apologise for the genre's demands. Half-star reservation is just that the genre itself is actually hard and not everyone will enjoy it. If you remember the original or have any affection for early-80s arcade shoot-em-ups, play this.
