Defend IO is multiplayer tower-defence cooperative. Teams of four players defend a shared base against AI invader waves. The format combines tower-defence's strategic placement with cooperative-online play, which is a combination I appreciate in principle.
Honestly, in practice the cooperative element underdelivers. Each player can place towers on their own quadrant of the shared base. There's no constructive interaction between quadrants beyond shared resource pool, which means most "cooperative" play is just four people independently doing tower-defence in parallel. The team isn't really a team.
The tower-defence mechanic is competent. Eight tower types with cost-effectiveness trade-offs. Twenty waves with escalating threat patterns. Standard tower-defence economics. The base challenge is well-tuned for skilled solo play and gets easier with more competent teammates.
What works is when the AI sends a wave that threatens multiple quadrants simultaneously. In those moments the team has to coordinate (verbally via the ping-tool or by example through tower placement) to share defensive load. These moments are interesting. They're rare.
Three stars. Decent tower-defence with weak cooperative layer. Worth playing solo against bots if the teamplay coordination isn't there in your lobby. The cooperative format the game advertises isn't quite delivered.
