Editor review

Cactus Jump is the Chrome offline-dinosaur game with biomes and power-ups bolted on. You know the original. Press space to jump over cacti. Original was the offline default on Chrome since 2014. Cactus Jump takes that and adds enough new variety to justify being a separate game rather than a clone.

Five biomes (desert, jungle, ice, volcano, neon city) each with different obstacles and a slightly different aesthetic. Power-ups every 50 metres or so: shield that absorbs one hit, magnet that pulls coins, jet-pack that lets you fly for three seconds. The power-ups are infrequent enough to feel earned rather than constant.

I'll admit I started playing this expecting to bounce off after five minutes and instead spent forty-five minutes on it. The biome rotation keeps individual runs feeling different. The power-up timing creates micro-decisions about when to use them versus save them. It's just enough texture on top of the original mechanic to support sustained play.

Where I'd push back is the touch controls. The on-screen jump button is slightly laggy compared to keyboard space-bar. About 30ms by my estimation, which on the late-game obstacle densities makes the difference between clearing a jump and not. Desktop play is the recommended.

Four stars. Surprisingly satisfying expansion of a familiar mechanic. Worth a few sessions, especially if you have nostalgic affection for the original Chrome dino game.
