How to play

Press and hold any key (or touch the screen) to rise; release to fall. Navigate between obstacle pairs. The music drives the obstacle timing; learning to listen as well as look is the key to longer runs. Each successful obstacle increases your score; collision ends the run.

  • Plays well one-handed on mobile devices

Editor review

Wave Surfer is doing the rhythm-game-with-no-button-but-one thing, and doing it well enough. Ride a procedural sine wave through obstacles that pulse to the music. Tap to flip your surfer above or below the wave. That's all. It's simple and focused and works.

Procedural-music generation is the bit I find clever. The wave you're riding is literally the audio waveform, which means hitting obstacles correlates with hitting beats. You can almost play it with your eyes closed if you've got the music going. I tested that for about three minutes before crashing into a wall, but the concept works.

Downside: tracks repeat after maybe a half hour of play. I started recognising rhythms before I'd cleared the introductory section. More music variety would push this up a half-star for me. Still, what's here is well-built and pleasant.
