Editor review
Tomb Explorer is top-down tomb exploration with environmental puzzles. Solve mechanisms. Avoid traps. Retrieve the artifact. The Tomb Raider influence is right there in the slug name and the design clearly draws from the franchise's puzzle-room tradition.
The puzzle-room structure is the design's central pleasure. Each tomb consists of maybe a dozen rooms connected by passages. Each room has a puzzle (pressure plates, weight balances, light beams, mirror reflections, the standard archaeology-game vocabulary). Solving the room opens the passage to the next. Some rooms have hidden alcoves with optional treasure for completionists.
What works well is the trap-and-puzzle interaction. Some traps are part of the puzzle (you have to step on a pressure plate to disable a different trap). Some are independent hazards (spike pits, dart launchers, falling blocks). Reading which is which is part of the design.
Where it falls short is the variety. Four tombs total, each with similar puzzle vocabularies. By the third tomb the puzzles feel like variations of the same set of mechanics rather than new ideas. The mechanics are good. There just isn't enough material across the campaign to keep them fresh for the full four-to-six-hour runtime.
Three-and-a-half stars. Solid puzzle-tomb adventure with thoughtful mechanism design. Half-star reservation is the late-game puzzle variety. The early tombs are stronger than the late ones.
