Robot Rescue is sci-fi adventure with multi-robot puzzle mechanics. You control different robots with unique abilities to navigate each environment. The puzzle-platformer with multiple character types is a thoughtful design space and Robot Rescue does interesting things with it.
The four robot types are the design's central thing. Lift-bot can pick up and move objects. Climb-bot can scale vertical surfaces. Hack-bot can interact with electronic systems. Spark-bot can power dormant machinery. Each level requires switching between robots to combine their abilities into a route through the puzzle.
What makes the design work is that switching between robots has a real cost. You can only switch at designated terminals. Distance between terminals matters. The strategic question on each level is which sequence of robot-switches solves the puzzle, given the limited terminal placements. Some levels have multiple valid solutions. Some have only one.
The 30 levels build complexity smoothly. Early levels use two robot types. Late levels chain all four. The boss level uses an interesting time-pressure mechanic where you have to switch robots in response to environmental changes, which adds a real-time dimension to what would otherwise be a pure puzzle.
Three-and-a-half stars. Strong multi-character puzzle design with thoughtful constraints. Half-star reservation is the visual presentation, which is sterile sci-fi without much character. The puzzles deserve more atmosphere.
