Editor review
Mystery Manor is point-and-click mystery in a haunted manor. Solve interlocking puzzles. Uncover the story. Escape before dawn. The format is the haunted-house mystery that the genre's done since the 1980s and Mystery Manor delivers on it.
The puzzle interconnection is the design's strongest call. Most point-and-click games have discrete puzzles solved one at a time. Mystery Manor has puzzles that reference each other: the solution to one room reveals a clue used in another room three floors away. You build a mental map of the manor's secrets across the four-hour campaign and the late-game puzzles draw on observations from the first hour.
The story unfolds at appropriate pace. You're not told everything at once. You piece together what happened in the manor by reading old diaries, deciphering ghost interactions, finding hidden documents. The reveal at the end recontextualises some of the early observations in a way I found satisfying.
Atmosphere is the part I want to praise specifically. The manor is hand-drawn (pixel-art style) with appropriate lighting variation across rooms. Music is sparse and unsettling. Sound design (creaking floors, distant wind, occasional ghostly whispers) builds tension without being cheap. The mood is right for the genre.
Four-and-a-half stars. Strong point-and-click mystery with thoughtful puzzle interconnection. Half-star reservation is the pace, which I think runs slightly slow in the middle act. Worth pushing through to the ending.
