Editor review

This is the 15 Puzzle, the original sliding-block puzzle, dating to 1880. Fifteen numbered tiles in a 4x4 grid, one empty space. Slide tiles into the empty space until the tiles are in numerical order from 1 to 15 with the empty space in the corner.

Look, this is the puzzle that defined the entire sliding-block category, and I have a lot of affection for its mathematical structure. Sam Loyd's famous 1880s offer of $1000 to anyone who could solve a specific impossible permutation (the 14-15 swap) produced one of the more delightful con games in puzzle history.

Actual play, though, is repetitive. Once you understand the algorithm (cycle the top row first, then the left column, then the next row of the remaining sub-problem, then continue down), every puzzle reduces to the same procedure. The mathematical elegance doesn't survive the tenth solving. This isn't the puzzle's fault, it's the format's: a single puzzle type with a single algorithm to solve it doesn't reward repeated play the way a varied-puzzle-pack does.

This implementation is functionally correct. Tiles slide. Time is tracked. Best-time persists. Move counter tracks each tile movement. There's nothing wrong with the implementation. But the puzzle itself isn't where I'd send anyone for a satisfying browser puzzle. Two-and-a-half stars for accuracy to a famous historical puzzle. The historical interest is the main reason to play this rather than the play itself.
