How to play

WASD or arrow keys to move; space to interact with environmental elements; X or J to use the current ability (varies by context). Crystals are scattered throughout the cave system; collecting specific crystal sets unlocks new abilities. New abilities open previously inaccessible areas, requiring return trips to earlier locations.

Game features

  • Single interconnected map of approximately 60 rooms across three biomes
  • Six unlockable abilities that gate environmental progression
  • Hand-drawn map system shows visited rooms and unexplored exits
  • Three endings based on total crystal collection percentage
  • Save points distributed throughout the map for safe-state preservation
  • Plays well on keyboard, gamepad, and mobile touch

Editor review

Crystal Hunter is top-down exploration with metroidvania-style ability gating. Collect crystals to unlock new caves and abilities. The format overlaps with Crystal Caves (also on this site, 5 stars, the platformer Metroidvania I keep recommending). Crystal Hunter is the top-down version of the same idea.

Look, I like the Metroidvania format and I like top-down adventure games and I should love this. I mostly do. The ability-gating works as the format requires: you find an ability, you remember which areas you previously couldn't access, you return to those areas with the new ability, the map opens up. The dopamine of seeing a shortcut click into place is the whole appeal of the format.

What Crystal Hunter does well is the map interconnection. The whole world is one connected space with multiple paths between most points. Backtracking with new abilities reveals shortcuts that compress the world over time. By late-game I could traverse from any region to any other in maybe two minutes. Early-game the same trip took ten.

Where it falls short of Crystal Caves is the moment-to-moment gameplay. Top-down combat is shallower than the platformer's traversal-and-execution challenge. There are five abilities to find but they're mostly traversal abilities rather than mechanical depth additions.

Four stars. Solid top-down Metroidvania. Worth playing if you enjoyed Crystal Caves and want more of that genre. Half-star reservation is just that Crystal Caves is the better entry in this lineage.
