Castle Defender RPG is strategic adventure RPG. Recruit and equip soldiers. Defend a castle through escalating sieges. Improve fortifications between attacks. The hybrid format combines RPG-progression with tower-defence siege mechanics.
The recruitment-and-equipment layer is the design's interesting part. Between sieges you can hire soldiers (archers, swordsmen, cavalry, mages) and equip them with weapons and armour from your accumulated gold. Each soldier has stats and a small set of abilities. Better equipment matters. The composition of your defending force materially affects how the next siege plays out.
The siege itself is where the design wobbles. Sieges are real-time but you don't directly control soldiers. You position them before the siege starts and they fight automatically. Your role during the siege is reactive (place new soldiers from reserve, retreat damaged units, call out tactical orders). The lack of direct control means the siege feels more like watching than playing.
Where it works is when the strategic preparation pays off. A well-composed force with good fortification placement holds out longer than a poorly-prepared one. The connection between RPG-preparation and combat-result is real and satisfying when your plans hold.
Three stars. Interesting hybrid that doesn't quite reconcile its two genres. The RPG layer is good. The siege layer is too passive. Worth a play for the genre experiment.
