A Week with a Pixel 4a: Testing Mobile Games on a Budget Phone
The Pixel 4a is a 2020 budget phone and my main mobile test rig. Why testing on flagships lies, what the 4a actually reveals about browser-game performance, and why I havent upgraded.
Right, Ive referenced my Pixel 4a in maybe fifteen reviews on this site over the past year. People have asked why I havent upgraded and what I actually do with it. So this is the post about that. The short version is that the phone is a useful low-end testing rig and the high-end testing rigs lie about how games actually perform for most players. The long version is the rest of this post.
I bought my Pixel 4a in late 2020, when it was a current Google flagship at the budget tier. It cost roughly 350 pounds at the time. The specs were mid-range even then: Snapdragon 730G, 6GB RAM, 5.81-inch screen, 3140mAh battery. Five and a half years later it runs Android 14, gets security updates, and still works fine for everything I actually use it for. I have no reason to upgrade and I have several reasons not to.
What the Pixel 4a tells me about browser games
Mobile-game testing on a flagship phone is misleading because flagships have processing headroom that hides design problems. If your game is slightly inefficient in its rendering loop, a flagship still hits 60fps because it has enough overhead to absorb the inefficiency. The slight problem doesnt surface as a player-noticeable issue until the same code runs on a less powerful phone.
The Pixel 4a doesnt have that headroom. Its Snapdragon 730G is solid for normal phone tasks but tight for graphics-intensive games. A browser game that runs 60fps on flagships might run 45fps on the 4a. Or 30fps. Or stutter intermittently as the CPU thermal-throttles.
This is exactly the kind of degradation that real players notice. The flagship test says the game runs at 60fps. The 4a test says the game runs at 60fps when conditions are perfect and 30fps when theyre not. Both statements are true. The 4a-tested version is more useful for understanding how the game will feel for most players.
What I do with it
For every game review on this site, I run at least one play session on the 4a if the game claims mobile support. Specifically.
I check frame rate at the moment the game loads. Some games hit 60fps for the first ten seconds and then drop to 45 once asset streaming kicks in. This pattern is invisible on flagships and obvious on the 4a.
I check thermal throttling. Five minutes of continuous play on the 4a usually warms the phone enough to trigger Androids thermal management. Games that depend on consistent CPU performance start running noticeably worse around the five-minute mark. Flagship players dont see this. 4a players do.
I check touch responsiveness. The 4as touch sensor is older and slightly slower than current flagships. If the games touch handling is borderline-responsive on flagships, itll feel sluggish on the 4a. The gap is usually 20 to 30 milliseconds.
I check battery drain. Some games eat battery faster than they should because they keep the GPU active even during low-activity moments. On a flagship with a 5000mAh battery, you dont notice. On a 4a with a 3140mAh battery (which is half-degraded after five years of cycles), you notice in maybe twenty minutes of play.
I check audio latency. The 4as audio output has noticeable latency on some apps. Games that depend on tight audio-visual sync expose this. Most mobile games tolerate it; rhythm games and stealth games dont.
What this changes about my reviews
Roughly 30 percent of the games I review feel worse on the 4a than they did during my desktop or flagship-phone testing. Sometimes the gap is small (the game is fine but you can feel the older hardware). Sometimes its significant (the game stutters enough to affect playability).
When the gap is significant, I flag it in the review. The review reflects how the game actually performs across the device range most players use. Not just how it performs on best-case hardware.
This is one reason my reviews tend to be lower on average than other browser-game review sites. Im rating against a real-world performance bar rather than a tested-on-our-flagship bar. The difference is real and matters for players choosing what to spend their time on.
Why I havent upgraded
Several reasons.
First, the phone works fine for everything I actually do with it. Call, text, browser, podcast, occasional game. The use cases that would benefit from a faster phone arent use cases I have.
Second, upgrading the phone would remove my low-end testing rig. Id have to keep the 4a as a dedicated test device, which means buying a new phone purely for the testing role rather than upgrading. The economics dont make sense.
Third, Im sceptical of the phone-upgrade cycle in general. Phones have been mature consumer electronics for at least eight years. The improvements between flagships year-over-year are marginal. The marketing wants me to upgrade more often than the actual hardware progress justifies.
Fourth, the 4a was Googles last phone with a 3.5mm headphone jack. I still use wired headphones for podcasts during my QA work. Upgrading means giving that up.
Fifth, the camera is fine for the photos I take. The screen is fine for reading. The battery is fine for one full day plus reserve. I dont have problems with the phone.
What this means for you
If youre reading reviews on this site to decide which games to play, the 4a testing is part of the value proposition. The reviews factor in mobile performance on representative low-end hardware rather than just best-case scenarios. Your phone is probably closer to my Pixel 4a in capability than to a current flagship, statistically.
If youre a developer reading this site, you should test on a low-end phone. A 2020-era mid-range Android (like my 4a) is roughly the median capability of phones in active use in 2026. If your game works on that, itll work for most people. If it doesnt, your audience is smaller than you think.
If youre a player wondering whether to upgrade your phone for mobile gaming, my view is dont. Modern browser games are designed to be playable on mid-range hardware. The flagship-required games tend to be poorly-designed games that depend on hardware compensation. Mid-range phones are the audience the good games are built for.
Ill keep using the 4a until it stops working. Probably another two years. After that Ill buy whatever the budget-tier Pixel is at the time. The cycle doesnt reward upgrading sooner.
Phone is a tool. Its a tool that does what I need. The marketing departments would prefer I think otherwise. Im not going to.
