Rugby Touch is top-down touch rugby. Pass laterally. Sidestep tacklers. Score tries before the seven-minute match clock runs out. The format is the touch-rugby variant (lower-contact, faster, played widely in schools and clubs) rather than full union or league.
The lateral-passing mechanic is the central thing. Rugby's defining rule (you can't pass forward) is correctly modelled. Your ball-carrier can pass to teammates positioned behind them on the field. This creates the spread-attack puzzle that rugby is built around: get the ball into open space by stretching the defence laterally.
The sidestep mechanic is the other key piece. Quick directional dodge to evade a tackler. Limited cooldown so you can't spam it. Timing is generous on the easy difficulty and tight on hard. Skilled play involves chaining sidesteps and lateral passes to break through defensive lines.
Where it falls short is the team-AI on your side. Your teammates make appropriate runs in most situations but occasionally bunch up or fail to support your ball-carrier. Plays break down due to AI positioning that isn't your fault. This is frustrating in a way that team-sports games shouldn't be.
Three stars. Functional touch-rugby with one good central mechanic and one frustrating AI flaw. Worth playing the seven-minute matches for a session or two. Less compelling than the more polished football and tennis entries on this site.
