How to play

Left and right arrows adjust your grip pressure on the opponents gi. Throw inputs (J for forward throw, K for sweep, L for shoulder throw) attempt the named technique — timing must match the opponents balance state. Throws against a balanced opponent fail; throws against an off-balance opponent succeed.

Game features

  • Top-down judo competition format
  • Grip-and-throw mechanical system
  • Six tournament match progression
  • Three difficulty modes scaling AI counter-throw frequency
  • Local two-player versus
  • Slow-motion replay of successful throws

Editor review

Judo Champion is top-down judo throwing. Read the opponent's grip. Time the throw input. Score ippon or compete to a points decision. The genre is niche and Judo Champion handles the central mechanic surprisingly well.

The grip-reading is the design's most interesting layer. Before each engagement, both you and the opponent establish grips on each other's gi. The grip configuration affects which throws are available and which throws the opponent can defend. You can see the opponent's grip and they can see yours. Picking a throw that exploits a grip-mismatch is the strategic puzzle.

The throw-input is timing-based. Each throw has a brief execution window after the grip is set. Trigger too early and the opponent recovers their balance. Trigger too late and they've adjusted their grip to defend. Hitting the window throws them. Hitting the perfect window scores ippon (instant match win).

Where I respect the design is that the AI also plays this mini-game. The AI opponent reads your grip and chooses throws that target your weaknesses. They time their windows correctly more often than you do at first. The AI feels like an actual judo opponent rather than a damage sponge.

Three-and-a-half stars. Solid niche-sport sim with thoughtful grip-and-timing mechanics. Worth a play for the novelty and the surprisingly real strategic layer. Half-star reservation is the limited content (eight opponents in a single bracket) which runs out fast.
