Hockey Stars is top-down arcade ice hockey. Quick passing. Slap shots. Goalie reflex saves. Five-minute matches. The genre's best browser entries (and there are surprisingly few) tend to err on the simulation side; Hockey Stars goes arcade and is better for it.
The pass-and-shoot rhythm is the heart of the game. Quick lateral passes draw the defence out of position, opening lanes for shots. Slap shots from the blue line are powerful but slow to wind up, so defenders can intercept. Wrist shots from closer in are faster but less powerful. The shot-selection puzzle is real and the AI defence punishes bad decisions.
The goalie mechanic is what I appreciate most. Your goalie isn't fully automatic. When the puck approaches you have a brief moment to position them with a quick directional input. Get the angle right and you save. Get it wrong and you concede. This adds a defensive skill component that pure arcade hockey games usually skip.
Five-minute matches are the right length for a browser game. Long enough to develop a real puck-possession rhythm. Short enough to play several before getting tired. Tournament mode strings sixteen matches into a season bracket and adds win-percentage stakes to each game.
Four-and-a-half stars. Tight arcade hockey with a smart goalie mechanic. Half-star reservation is the absence of a versus-friend local mode. Hockey is a couch-multiplayer sport in spirit and not having that option here is a real miss.
