How to play

A and D to move horizontally; J for jab; K for hook; L for uppercut; space to block; shift to dodge. The opposing boxer telegraphs each attack with a brief windup animation; reading these telegraphs is the games defensive skill curve. Counterpunches landed during the opponents windup deal additional damage.

Editor review

Boxing Champion is side-view boxing with jab, hook, uppercut, block, and dodge mechanics. Full career mode through ten opponents. The genre traces to Punch-Out and Boxing Champion clearly references that tradition.

The combat mechanic is the central thing. You have light punch (jab), heavy punch (hook), uppercut for vertical attacks, block for incoming punches, and dodge for incoming high attacks. The opponent has the same options. The combat is about reading their windup, choosing the right defence, and counter-punching in their recovery window. This is correct genre-design for the Punch-Out tradition.

The ten opponents have hand-designed combat patterns. Each fighter has telegraphs you have to learn (a shoulder dip before a hook, a step-back before a left uppercut, etc). The first three opponents are tutorials. The mid-range fighters mix patterns enough to be challenging. The final boss has a multi-phase pattern that took me twenty-something attempts to beat.

Where I'd push back is the stamina system. Both fighters have stamina that depletes with punches and replenishes when blocking. The stamina mechanic should add strategic depth but in practice the AI rarely runs out of stamina, so the system mostly affects you. Asymmetric stamina-management is just frustrating.

Three-and-a-half stars. Solid Punch-Out tribute with one slightly off-tuned mechanic. Worth the career mode if you have any affection for the genre.
